Kudos To The Writers!!
Bud Dauphin/January 15th, 2005

Is it only an accident - Or is the Universe stepping in
To provide us with the inspiration - And then supply the discipline
To recognize our life's work - That causes us to feel true joy
At those moments of creativity - Which nothing can destroy!!

It might be creating mad hats - Or investigating organized crime
Maybe it's putting deals together - Or becoming an Amigo in your prime
Teaching others to write - And exploring English so to speak
Or creating floral arrangements - So a party can look quite chic!!

This party tonight is a celebration - But also a window into life
How the journey can be fulfilling - Or one that's filled with strife
For each of us hears a calling - Be it a voice or a dream in the night
Those that follow their dreams - Grow stronger after the first fright!!

For there are no accidents in life - When you are ready the teacher will appear
Each of us is a teacher - Helping others in their career
And each of us is a student - Listening for the magic that is within
Sometimes you must listen closely - Above the insistent din!!

Tonight we honor a writer - "Godless" might seem quite extreme
Hard working and successful - And most recently part of a writing team
We congratulate Pete Hautman - On his National Book Award
And even more so - On the way he carries his sword!!

The love of his life and partner - And his former teacher per chance
Pete and Mary Logue, his wife - Perform quite the discreet little dance
Success they've both achieved - In a craft where so few survive
Both of them being prolific writers - With a discipline that keeps them alive!!

It truly was historic - At least from my provincial point of view
Sharon Hendry, Pete and Ray Diprima - To name just a few
Were each attending Mary's class - Ray was the speaker that night
All became friends and colleagues - Much to all of their delight!!

Now it is my great honor to say - Congratulations Pete, this was no easy chore
We salute you for your big win - National Book Award for 2004
And to all you writers, one and all - I wish you all the very best
Most or all of you have been published - Which in itself is one huge quest!!
