Paul (far left) with Ali and Harvey MacKay
To My Friend Paul Ridgeway
Written by Erv Dauphin
He came onto the scene - With that chuckle and grin
That marks his sense of humor - And says it's really him
He became Wendell Anderson's advance man - Thanks to Big Tom Kelm
Tom was Paul's original taskmaster - The brain at Wendell Anderson's helm!!
Paul would do anything - As he learned to draw a crowd
From getting ballet dancers - To screaming in a megaphone, quite loud
He's worked for Mondale and Humphrey - And Harvey MacKay as well
Paul has many secrets - But like a lawyer, he won't tell!!
He's helped Curt Carlson - Fill the Metrodome with Swedes
And orchestrated both World Series - Taking care of everyone's needs
Do you need 50 Limos - Or food for a very large crowd
Paul starts spinning his Rolodex - Of which anyone would be proud!!
When Minneapolis was hungering - Enticing the Super Bowl to come
To frigid Minnesota in January - When surely the cold would numb
Paul Ridgeway and Harvey MacKay - With Marilyn Nelson at the lead
Worked out all the details - In the end the headlines read, SUCCEED!!
Minnesota got their Super Bowl - And Paul worked out the logistical nightmare
That was the beginning of his stardom - Because he has that natural flair
And throughout this entire process - One light shone bright and clear
For Paul worshipped his God - Which he holds in his heart quite dear!!
Oh, he can quote his scriptures - He studies with a group each week
And if you know Paul Ridgeway - Then you know he isn't meek
He's not afraid to tell others - About his God and what he's done
He's been a "Mentor" to many - Telling about the wonderful phenomenon!!
And he still has his sense of humor - That he possessed 35 years ago
When he and Kevin Foley - Were still studying to be a pro
And my how he's succeeded - Making many friends along the way
And never being in a situation - Where he didn't have something to say!!
And when your days are darkest - And you need to see a smile
Or have someone to walk with - Down that last and loneliest mile
If you've ever known Paul Ridgeway - And you give the Lord a call
Accepting him as your Savior - Open your eyes, you might see Paul!!
For he's been at many a bedside - Praying with those who are passing on
Helping them to accept - The awakening of a brand new dawn
He's not alone in his journey - For lovely wife Roz is at his side
Together they've been a team - Since she became Paul's bride!!
And if you haven't seen Paul for awhile - He just might suddenly reappear
For the Lord works in mysterious ways - And remember he's always near
And when Paul gives his wave - And yells across the room
"HEY pal, stay out of jail" - It cuts right through the doom and gloom!!
