Happy Retirement Paul!!

Sweeney’s Saloon/June 30,1998

To say your career was varied - Is understated, yes indeed

You’ve served many masters - I’m sure this, even you’ll concede

But who can claim, as you can - To have worked an FBI Squad

Entitled Chinese Espionage - Are you sure this wasn’t a facade!!

The late Hubert H. Humphrey - Got you into the political game

After the 68 Presidential race - Everything else seemed kinda tame

But Spannus spotted your talents - And hired you on the spot

The Minnesota Organized Crime Unit - You were perfect for the slot!!

But as Superintendent of the BCA - You probably had more fun

Using the first wire-tap in Minnesota - Gave the bad guys quite a stun

Like Jimmy’s Discount Clothing - And a judge on the take

And the guy known as "Franky" - You kept them all awake!!

But maybe your proudest moment - Please, stop and think

Remember the Domino Club - Where politicians used to drink

You ran your own surveillance - In a corn field late at night

It got you out from behind the desk - Much to your delight!!

Then along came Governor Perpich - And just like all the rest

He had an eye for talent - And wanted to recruit the very best

Two tours at Public Safety - As the Commissioner over all

With a stint at Dayton Hudson - Between each Perpich call!!

Then finally landing at the U - Public Safety’s number one cop

There seems to be that consistency - With cream rising to the top

Ray DiPrima calls you an intellect - The smartest cop he ever knew

Being a Cretin and U of M gradute - Hey! Maybe there’s a clue!!

But now it’s time for you to retire - Whatever that’s suppose to mean

Writing a book on Indian Treaties - And playing golf in between

Or maybe you and Jane will travel - But one thing remains quite clear

Minnesota is where your heart is - That’s why you’re staying here!!

So Paul, each of us here tonight - Hope you and Jane enjoy each day

But now that you’re retired - There’s one thing I have to say

As you look around this crowd - You’ve really got to wonder

Was Mark Winkler correct - Is organized crime here to plunder??
