Happy trails to you - My dear friend Roy

I was once your sidekick - When I was just a boy

With our steady mounts - Trigger and Sarge

Together we handled the trouble - No matter how small or large!!

I took your lunchbox to school - As we shared those happy days

Me and my friends would be cowboys - At recess, we’d round up strays

In the afternoon we ran home - And headed for the TV set

There you’d be, riding along - Then you and Dale would sing a duet!!

You taught me how to fight fair - And only when pushed into it

And to keep a smile upon my face - And to never, never quit

As I look back on those happy times - I always get a smile

The world back then was different - Life was not about guile!!

You left an indelible mark - The white hat you always wore

Today it’s a mark of honesty - Something we can’t ignore

And how about all your movies - My grandkids watch them today

Though I know most of the endings - It’s fun for us to play!!

No Roy, you loved people - With all the kids you gave a chance

Your life was so unselfish - That could be seen with just a glance

You and Dale provided the love - For kids and not just your own

You did it without the fanfare - It wasn’t something you wanted known!!

So Roy I know you and Trigger - Are riding that Happy Trail

Chasing down the bad guys - Putting them all in jail

Then sitting around the camp-fire - Singing a beautiful song

Thinking about a simpler time - When you helped little boys along!!

Please know we haven’t forgotten - And every now and then

We think about you and Trigger - And wish we were back again

Just little boys at play - With not a care on our mind

I thank you Roy for that memory - That I had to leave behind!!
